Why do you want to study architecture at MSA?
The difference between MSA and other schools is that it's a joint program with MMU and I like the course design. I'm excited by the wide range of courses for different mediums. It gives the students flexibility to express their ideas. The many connections with the residents and studios in the community will give me more opportunities to have real life work experience.
A review of a recent exhibition or building that you have visited
I was recently traveling with my family to Germany so I was lucky enough to have the chance to go to Cologne Cathedral and I was astonished by its perfect combination of decoration, structure and culture. All that I had learned about Gothic Architecture from my Western Architecture History class could finally be used practically. I was really excited to act as a tour guide to my family, giving a brief introduction to architecture history and knowledge. Even if they weren't as excited as I was!
As I was climbing the tallest tower I could see the urban planning surrounding the cathedral was based in conversation with its architecture. It sunk in how powerful it was that the whole city and generations put in to the building process over hundreds of years. To see it in person was inspiring because I could take in the enormity of the impact one building had on the area it was built. The architecutre had life in that it grew and changed over time. When I climbed the stairs, I could see the combination of past and present, changing through time as people have lived and passed through it because architecture can't be seperated from human life and culture.
A statement about your favourite architect or building
My preference changes as I gain in age and experience. For the time being, Rem Koolhaas' architecture viewpoints and his observation of the society have played an influential role in my personal making of an architect. However, his ways somehow contradict with the mainstream academia.
A work of architecture which you would like to experience in person.
Being in love with the modern architecture, a place I would like to experience in person would be the architectural masterpiece called Notre Dame du Haut, designed by Le Corbusier. I need to be there to experience the change of lighting through the day and the spiritual atmosphere.
